Entrepreneurial Moms Committing 100% Benefits Your Business and Your Kids [Metromom Podcast]

Monday, November 9th, 2009

This summer, my husband and I went to a camp called Enlightened Warrior Training Camp, one of the many personal development classes that Harv Eker has hosted. One specific idea from this camp that really stuck with me is “either commit 100%, or commit 0%.” That means if you know you can’t commit fully to something, just say no, rather than do it half-heartedly. And, when you say yes, go full throttle. I want to share with you some ideas on how to focus on the commitments that will get “it” done.

Perfectionism in Your Business Leads to Procrastination

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Perfection is an excuse to procrastinate I love what one of the women in my group coaching sessions said recently when we were discussing what holds us back from getting things done. She said, "Perfection is really just an excuse to procrastinate."

Seeking the all-elusive goal of perfectionism in your business is really just an avoidance method and an opportunity to keep from moving. I’ve learned that it serves me better to take consistent imperfect action as I work towards my objective. If I keep moving forward, I get clarity along the way. If I focus on the minutiae of the details being perfect, I stop and waste precious time.

Let me share with you a recent example of how to let go of perfectionism in your business…

This summer I piloted my Get It Done Challenge coaching program to 10 women. When I invited these 10 women to join me, I knew what I wanted to teach them and I knew what I wanted their end results to be. That was 80% of the equation.

What I didn’t know was the other 20%. I didn’t know the exact details of what my handouts would be, or what exercises we’d do in class, or what my members’ area would look like. I didn’t have all the details mapped out perfectly. At this point, would you have demanded perfectionism in your business—needing to have every detail worked out?

In a past life, I wouldn’t have sent the invitation out until every detail was figured out. Realistically for me that could have meant extra weeks and months noodling around the details. Wondering, wondering, wondering – which is really a code word for procrastinating. But instead I trusted that I’d figure them out before the class went live.

Who would have been served if I had waited? Certainly not the women who learned from my class and who received valuable tools, and certainly not me who received invaluable feedback. Now I can take this program to a much larger audience.

By taking imperfect action, I took the leap of faith for myself, and just did it. That was huge for me. Hopefully in this situation I can be a model for you to just step out when you think you’re not perfect and just put it out there anyway. (FYI – I received so much positive feedback on this program it confirmed that I made the right decision.)

Lessons Learned from a Recovering Perfectionist

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Lessons learned from a recovering perfectionist I’m a recovering perfectionist. By nature I really like everything to be very organized, every ‘t’ crossed, ‘i’ dotted and everything to have my personal stamp on it. But I know in my past, my quest for perfection kept me from moving forward, so I’ve had to tame it. I also know it’s not an easy beast to tame.

So, let’s be honest…How much is your desire for perfection holding you back? Being able to recognize that desire can often give you the motivation to just move forward and take action. I want to share with you some of the ways trying to be perfect has slowed me down and more importantly what I did to become a recovering perfectionist.

Perfectionism can have an especially negative impact on your success when you run your own business. A really important message I want to communicate is there’s really no such thing as perfect. So if you’re struggling to make it "just perfect" you’re directing your energy into something that’s impossible to achieve.

Another way perfectionism slows us down is we feel like we want to know it all (and should know it all). We think, "This is my business. Who knows it better than me?" The truth is, as experienced or knowledgeable as we might be, we don’t always have all the answers. Sometimes we need to reach out to somebody and admit in a vulnerable way, "I don’t know how to do this. Please help. Guide me."

At times getting the help that you need in your business means letting go of some control. As you delegate to a virtual assistant, graphic designer or copywriter, it’s unlikely that they’re going to do it exactly the way you do. That’s a fact. What I realize is that delegating saves me so much time and energy. Maybe they did it 90% of how I would have done it and I had to tweak it 10% but it still dramatically increased my momentum.

So as a recovering perfectionist here are my lessons learned…

I just work to take action, even if it’s imperfect action and just get my projects out there.

I’m not afraid to ask for help. I’m comfortable admitting that I don’t know it all.

I let go and instead of completely controlling all the details, I delegate to my team trusting that they’ll get it done. (and when we have mistakes, that’s what "oops" messages are for.)

Trust me, the satisfaction of getting it done (by letting go of your desire to be perfect) and getting your brilliance out into the world makes it worth the effort. You’ll free up your energy to tackle your big ideas and really get some momentum building in your business. Introducing the “Get It Done System”

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

image A lot of entrepreneurs I know are trying to get it done. They’re taking classes, buying info products, watching what others are doing. BUT they’re not necessarily doing it. You probably turn to your coach, or top internet marketers or your mastermind partners when you get stuck. That’s great! I’m definitely encourage that as I too get a lot of clarity learning from others but…

Here’s my experience, all those support people really do help you figure out WHAT you need to do but somehow you’re left to figure out HOW to do it all on your own. I mean HOW do you fit a big project into you’re already busy life? For me personally I’m a mom of three children (7, 10, and 11). I pack lunches, volunteer at school, drive carpools, help with homework, manage my home, and do my best to exercise regularly and keep my house clean.

So, as the “Get it Done Girl”, I’m going to share with you HOW to do it.

Imagine that you have a model so when you have an idea you know the steps to put it into action. You now generate income from that idea, and you can feel great knowing you’re making a difference and serving your client,

Yes, there is a method to the madness! I have a great system and now I want to share it with YOU. The 5-Step Get it Done System I created is really a culmination of all I do personally and what I’ve learned that can help you get your brilliant ideas out of your head and out there into the world where they deserve to be.

I am SPILLING THE BEANS and revealing all 5 Steps to the Get It Done System! Check it out and you’ll get the complete layout of the system that I’ve developed to help you get out of overwhelm and get your brilliance out into the world.

My philosophy is I could just give you the steps for each individual project but that means the next time you have a project you still won’t have the system to get it done. I believe in the old proverb: Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.

I would love to get your feedback on the Get It Done System so please post your comments and let me know what questions you’ve got!

Entrepreneurial Moms Committing 100% Benefits Your Business and Your Kids

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

My husband and I have taken many of Harv Eker’s personal development classes over the years. Just this summer, we went to a camp called Enlightened Warrior Training Camp. One of the key messages they taught is the importance of keeping a commitment to yourself – this is really important lesson for us as entrepreneurial moms. When you say you’re going to do something, you do it.

One specific idea from this camp that really stuck with me is “either commit 100%, or commit 0%.” That means if you know you can’t commit fully to something, just say no, rather than do it half-heartedly. And, when you say yes, go full throttle.

But, what should I commit to…?

busy womanIf you’re one of the many entrepreneurial moms with children at home, taking care of your kids is a priority – you’re committed. In fact, that’s probably why you chose to run your own business and work from home. You wanted to honor your commitment to your family.

Now when it comes to your business it may be harder to determine what you should commit to… Ask yourself, “How does that project serve my business? If I get this particular project done, is it going to help to build my list, generate income, or set me up as an expert?” Those are some important things that entrepreneurial moms have to think when you’re making a commitment to get something done.

I’ve been really focused on the commitment we make to ourselves when we say we’re going to do things. Over the summer I made a conscious decision of where I’d focus my business energy. I only focused on anything “Get It Done,” be it my Get It Done Circle or my Get It Done coaching program. There were a lot of other things that were showing up but I had to move them down the list. I have a certain amount of working hours, in which I want to maximize my efforts, and I’m committed to shutting down when my kids come home so I can attend to their needs.

We all have services and products that could make a big difference to the people we serve…if we offer them. However, if you’re not getting your offerings out there, your customers can’t benefit. You don’t get to make the difference you want, nor do you receive the money you deserve to be paid. I feel very strongly that you owe it to yourself to never put yourself in that situation.

The great thing about committing yourself to what’s important is you also teach your children a valuable lesson. Chances are you’ve talked to your kids about the value of commitment. This is one of the reasons a lot of parents sign their kids up for sports. You’ve probably heard the saying, “You can’t hit a home run, if you don’t step up to the plate.”

But here’s the thing, the commitment you show in your life as entrepreneurial moms is going to have a greater impact on your kids than what they learn in Little League. Take a moment and reflect on what lessons you’d like to help your children to learn. Model that same commitment in your life and you’ll inspire your children to do the same. You’ll also see momentum building in your business as you finally get your important projects off the ground.

FYI – On Thursday October 15th at 1 PM EST, I’ll be sharing more on how to get things done in my F*REE teleclass – Get It Done 101 – How to STOP Procrastinating and Tackle Your BIG Ideas with Confidence…So that You Can Make More Money and Help More People!
