Work from Home Tips – How to be More Organized and Get More Done

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

People ask me how I’m able to accomplish what I do – raising three energetic children (who go in three different directions) and managing a growing business. One of my best work from home tips for getting the important things that really matter to me done is to be organized.

Did you know that we waste an incredible amount of time, energy, and money when we’re disorganized? The National Organization of Professional Organizers says that it is around 180 hours a year in a business (that’s more than a week). For a business mom, it’s probably triple that.clip_image002

What are some work from home tips that will help you organize your life and office to accomplish everything – that matters to you personally and professionally – in the most profitable way? From personal experience, I know that it’s easier said than done.

My friend, Debbye Cannon, the Business Mom Mentor, helped me identify some big timewasters and also how to be more organized with each one and I’d like to share some of these work from home tips with you.

Timewaster #1 – Searching for lost items.

How many times, as business moms, have we had to stop what we’re doing and frantically search for lost items like keys or things that the kids need?

Get into the habit of labeling items and designating places where they belong. Think about what tools you need and where you often need them and then put them there – even if it means buying a number of them. For example label a pair of scissors for each room that you need them-"Kitchen Scissors", "Bathroom Scissors", "Bedroom Scissors", "Office Scissors".

Also, as a mom of smaller kids, I have a number of containers with band-aids, creams and those sorts of things. I keep one in my bag, one in the upstairs kids’ closet, and one in the car. I know eventually I’ll use it all up and it’s right there when I need it.

Timewaster #2 – Your paperwork is scattered.

Do you have piles of paper on your desk or on your kitchen counter?

Compile all the essential things you need to work on your business – papers, catalog, order forms, customer list, calendar – and put them in a three-ring binder or portable file . You’ll be able to take it with you and work on it while you wait for your appointments.

Timewaster #3- Reading unimportant emails.

Are you constantly checking your email throughout the day? Perhaps as a way to avoid doing something you don’t want to do but really need to do?

Handle emails before or after not during income-producing time, otherwise it’ll be a distraction from the work you need to do to move your business forward. You can also use a timer and set a limit to how much time you want to spend reviewing email and periodically unsubscribe from the ones that are not important.

Timewaster #4 – Failing to use a schedule productively.

Do you jump from one task to the next and end up feeling like you can’t finish anything?

Try to schedule a particular activity per day – Monday for writing, Tuesday for phone calls and interviews, Wednesday for personal days, etc. When an appointment comes up, you’ll know exactly what day to schedule it on. This sets the tone and allows you to get in the mindset of what you need to accomplish.

Your personal life and business life will ebb and flow. There will be busy times. There will be quiet times. Instead of doing it all in one day and being wiped out the next, try to be flexible enough to establish a consistent rhythm of moving forward.

If something comes up, like you need to take your children on a fieldtrip, enjoy the time with them and then get back on track with work on a different day.

Be mindful of the Law of Attraction – what you think about is what you bring about. Instead of listening to yourself and others say, "you ‘re so disorganized", give yourself the pass that it’s okay not to be perfect, and that you ‘re getting better at having it all together with the help of these work from home tips.

Work at Home Moms – Are You Fostering a Team Spirit in Your Family?

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

We hear about teamwork all the time. For you to be successful in any joint venture you have to get everybody feeling like they’re part of the team. The same is true with your family – everything runs more smoothly when you function like a team. This is especially important when you’re a work at home mom since your family is often involved in your business.

The first step is to make sure everyone in your family is involved and participating. Maybe have a family council meeting. Sit down and say, “Here are all the things that need to be done every week in our household. Which ones would you like to be in charge of?” Then make a chore chart so everybody takes turns or can pick things they’re good at doing.

You should also make sure everyone understands what the goal and payoff is. In business you know everyone is always thinking, “What’s in it for me?” Your family is the same way, in order to be behind something they need to know what’s in it for them.

For example, are you saving money so you can have a family vacation or move to a better house? Do your kids know about these objectives? Make sure they understand that you work to help support your family. When your kids understand that, you’re encouraging them be a part of your team.

Finally don’t forget to celebrate as a team. Celebrate with your family for reaching a goal, whether it’s saving money for your vacation or getting all of your chores done this week. You can do it inexpensively. Maybe take them out for an ice cream cone or get off work a little early and take them to the park to play on the swings together.

Plan together, work together and celebrate together and you’ll start enjoying the benefits of family teamwork. Four Principles Every Entrepreneurial Woman Needs for Online Success

Friday, May 1st, 2009

I just finished recording my Wrap-Up call for the Metromom Online Success Telesummit where I shared my highlights. It’s been a fascinating two weeks as I interviewed 18 different internet marketing experts who shared tips on how to maximize your online presence.

I think what I found the most interesting was how the expertise of the different speakers weaved together. In the end I discovered consistent references to what it takes to be successful in today’s economy.

Let me share some of my highlights of the four online success principle I discovered:

1. You Need to be Authentic

One theme that kept coming up from was the importance of being authentic in your marketing. I heard it from Nancy Marmolejo as she talked about social networking, Michele PW as she shared copywriting tips, and Wendy Maynard as she discussed blogging. They all said basically the same thing – the key to being successful online is to be authentic and create relationships that are mutually beneficial. Laura West then really pulled this authenticity theme together when she spoke about “Attraction Marketing.”

2. Make Sure You Use Every Avenue to Connect

Jennifer Odear and Caleb Scoville really helped clarify how you can maximize your expertise by using all the different ways of communicating. Jennifer spoke about recycling your content and using it in your blog, articles, press releases, newsletters and more. Then Caleb shared how to take that very same content and use it in podcasts and YouTube videos.

What’s great is that once you have some content there are so many ways to get it out there. Alicia Forest gave great tips on using content to build your list. Amy Miyamoto showed how to tie your content into your social networking, Shannon Cherry shared publicity tips and Ty Downing shared easy-to-implement SEO ideas.

3. Moms Especially Need Foolproof Systems

Busy women juggling a business and a family need more then great ideas. They need help implementing proven systems that will get the money pouring in. Beth Schneider and Erin Blaskie gave fantastic tips on how to build a solid team and then create systems to keep things running smoothly. Jennifer Haubein shared how technology can help you set-up a website that helps you build relationships effortlessly. Debbye Cannon shared tips specific to moms on how to keep their family thriving as they build their business.

4. Get Your Mindset Prepared for Success

No amount of internet marketing strategies will help you achieve your goals if you’re stuck with a negative attitude or mindset. Victoria Colligan and Traci Long, from Ladies Who Launch, were truly inspirational as they shared how to take the next step in your business. Gina Bell shared how to identify and eliminate resistance to self-promotion and success.

The Metromom Online Success Telesummit is live (and free) for 2 days – May 1st and 2nd you can listen to any or all of the experts for free. Click here to learn more! Once you listen I’d love to hear your feedback so come back and post your comments. What were some of the highlights for you?
