Turn Limiting Beliefs into Supportive Beliefs
In the second of a series of blogs around why we don’t get done what we want to get done, limiting beliefs may be one of your culprits. You may have the best idea, greatest marketing strategies, and effective systems in place, but you still feel stuck. You can’t gain any momentum and you can’t necessarily figure out why.
Often we’ve got old voices going on in our heads and we’re sitting with junk and baggage about ourselves that causes us to think we can’t get our stuff out there.
Reason #2 Why you don’t get things done “Limiting beliefs are holding you back”
A limiting belief is something that you believe to be true about yourself, that most likely isn’t true at all. Until you get to the bottom of this belief it can prevent you from moving forward as you’d like.
Some limiting beliefs have been internalized from childhood. You believe them to be as true as the sky is blue and the grass is green. That’s how you function in the world. It’s not until you challenge that belief and focus on a more conscious level that you can see it isn’t true at all.
Some examples of limiting beliefs that I have seen affect women in business are:
- I don’t know enough, why would they want what I have to offer?
- I’ve never made money before, why would it be different now?
- If I studied more, or learned more, then I could do what I want to do.
- Money only comes to those who work really hard
- Because I’ve never done it before, I can’t do it.
- I’m not really an expert at what I do, others know so much more than me.
I’ve found that the first step to shift your limiting belief is to tune into your unconscious mind and listen to what it’s telling you. For example, many of us struggle with the belief that we can’t earn money because we haven’t earned it in the past, that’s a limiting belief. The result of this belief is most likely going to cause a self-fulfilling prophecy – you’re going to make it a reality by not earning money this time around either.
Henry Ford’s beautiful quote is that “Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right.”
Shift your limiting beliefs into supporting beliefs.
Once you’ve identified one of your limiting beliefs, that awareness allows you to shift the energy into a belief that serves you. You can shift the energy that was sitting in that negative belief into something new—something more positive and supportive. What I find so empowering is the realization that when it comes to beliefs, we get to choose them. We can dismiss old ones, and incorporate new ones.
I used to have a limiting belief that I wasn’t a teacher and that creating content was hard for me. I have shifted that belief to one that’s more supportive and says that I can teach what I love, in my way, to those that want to learn from me. This subtle shift has opened up a new world for me (and will allow me to unveil a new program to you next week).
If you’re not accomplishing what you want, then I encourage you to examine what beliefs are getting in your way and shift a limiting belief to one that’s more supportive. Please use this blog as a forum to receive support.
