Get it Done While Working from Home by Managing Interruptions and Distractions

Kid interrupting a mom Entrepreneurs who work at home are confronted with a whole set of challenges that other working people don’t have –  your four year old interrupts you with "Where’s my toy?"; the laundry and sink of dirty dishes stare you in the face; a stack of magazines you want to read or a TV program you want to watch tempts you…

But if you want to move your business forward and successfully juggle your responsibilities, you have to learn survival skills. Here are two common challenges we face and some suggestions on how to cope with them.

Challenge – Interruptions from children, relatives, and friends

•    Schedule your work hours while the children are asleep.
•    Hire a nanny to care for the children during work hours, and get dad to watch them in the evening work hours.
•    Have a separate work area so you can either shut the door or teach people that when you’re in your separate work area you’re not to be disturbed.
•    When people call to chat, kindly but firmly remind them you’re working and will call them back when your work day is finished.
•    Make sure they know your work hours.

Challenge – Distractions of personal or household business

•    Remove all non-work related items from your separated work area.
•    When ideas come up, jot them down on sticky notes to do later, and keep focused on your work project.
•    Make a commitment to your work hours and stick to it.

What helps you manage interruptions and distractions when you work from home? I’ll be sharing more get it done while working at home solutions in an upcoming blog – like what to do when you feel stuck, uninspired and overwhelmed.

  • Thank you for any one of these reminders. I even school children, I always think I'm beginning my day. And forget about summer ... When the children of my working time is difficult to find. NOW that the limits / rules to adopt, in June, when school is in!
  • Great post Kim. To add some suggestions: put a "do not disturb" sign on the door of your work area and let all people - young and old(er) know the rule - when this sign is up - no interruptions unless life is hanging in the balance - literally! Also, if at all possible, have calls screened with caller ID and do not pick up the phone unless it is a business related call (this has preserved hours of my work life)!

The caller ID is key and I'm going to take you up on the Do not Disturb sign. Thanks
  • One of the things I talk with my clients about is the consideration of value. I'f you're not valuing your time, why should anyone else? Setting clear guidelines and holding yourself - as well as those you love - accountable for honoring your time and value are a BIG step in running a real business from home.

    Great post, Kim!

Thanks Lisa. I think you're message about value can extend to our children as well. If we're not valuing our time, why should they. Take care (I'll get back to you about your other message later).
  • I try to schedule my working hours around the kid's schedule. I wake up very early to ensure that I have the quiet time that I need to focus and plan. I do most of my work during school hours and then enjoy my afternoons with them. Nighttime is for catching up, answering emails, social networking, etc... • I work from home with 3 kids ages 11, 8, and 2, and I love to use my 2 year old's nap time to get my major-focus work done.

When my girls were younger I had a sign on the door that was red and said STOP on one side and was green and said GO on the other, so they knew from abut the age of 3 when it was o.k. to come in, and when they needed to leave mommy alone. I also put a small desk with an old keyboard in my office, crayons, paper, glue sticks, books, paper dolls, etc. to keep them busy when I needed to work on things like answering emails that didn't require intense focus.

I find myself now, moving my laptop from room to room so I can keep my eyes eye on my son. I've also made use of listening to some meditation type music on my mp3 player to drown out the noise and help me stay focused on writing.
  • If the kids are not home, you can also try going to the library or working from your favorite shop where there is free WiFi. This works well if you don't need any of the files at home.

I agree, there are many days I just need to get out of my house and go to my second office at Starbucks and usually go with a very specific project that I want to get completed while I'm there. This prevents me from getting distracted with checking emails etc while I'm there.
  • I currently only have 2 days a week when I'm actually ALONE to GET things DONE, so on the other days I have had to learn how to work WITH a child or two around me. In my office I have a seperate computer/work station for my son. As well as ONE basket of toys for my daughter. If they FEEL they need to be in the office with me at the same time, I have them do "their" work and give them projects (crafts, etc) to complete. If that doesn't work I move my lap top to the kitchen table and make my work station MOBILE. Sometimes just having me out of the office is enough for them and they play and move on from Mommy!

  • Thanks for these reminders Kim. Seems I always get distracted during my days, even when the kids are in school. And forget about the summertime...when the kids are home it's so tough to find my work time. I better start setting up these boundaries/rules NOW so they're in place when school gets out in June!

Great blog post. Looking forward to the future post on what to do when you feel uninspired and overwhelmed. In the beginning it was easy to stay focused and motivated, after over 17-years some days that is exactly how I feel. Have a great weekend!
