Use Audio to Serve Your Community

events-gid As entrepreneurs, we want to connect with and be of service to people in our community and give them a sense of who we are.  It’s one thing to show someone who you are in written form. It’s a very different thing when someone gets to hear you in audio. That can be much more impactful.

You may be comfortable with writing your blog or ezine, but not all of the people in your community take in information by reading.  Many prefer listening.   Or, if they’re like me, they like to use both.  At different times, I’ll grab transcripts or have my CDs in my car. Sometimes I have my iPod and need information in MP3 format.

Here are a few tips on using audio to reach your community:

•    You can record yourself presenting an ezine by using a handheld device or by using Audio Acrobat (which I’ve used for years and absolutely love its ease of use.)  You just speak and start recording yourself, and save the file as an MP3 which can be uploaded to your site.

•    If you need to edit your recording there are free online tools like the audio editor Audacity. (With a bit of experimentation, this is very simple to use).

•    You can use these recorded audio segments as mini podcasts on your blog.  You can also submit your content to iTunes.

•    If you are conducting teleseminars make sure you record them and repurpose that information. This same process will work with recording your public speeches. If you have obtained permission from your client, you can also record coaching sessions and phone consultations.  (You always want to let someone know that you’re recording.)

It may be out of your comfort zone to use audio presentations of your great content, but you’ll be of much more service to a greater breadth of people in your community. Using audio will enable you to leverage your knowledge and repurpose the content that’s in your head (or on your hard drive) into powerful multi-media marketing.

  • I've been recording via my teleconference calls and needed a place to host, like Youtube and found www.fileave.com. You can post audio files up to 50mb free, you can get html code to post on website and a url for email.
  • I love this post, Kim. I'm already doing most of what you're talking about (and since I became a Mac, now using video as well), but I often forget to incorporate it as often as I should. I love Audio Acrobat and Audacity and used them to create all 4 of my audio cds and my teleseminars.

Thanks for the reminder. Just what I needed this morning!

It;s funny that you should mention about using video. I, too, just got a Mac (which I absolutely love) and am just tip-toeing into using video as well. The more we can communicate using different medium, the better.
BTW, do you know Kim Rhodes? If not, I want to connect you.
  • I love this article, Kim! I've used audioacrobat.com for a long time and love it. Have you heard of whistletree.com? I found it recently and I'm finding myself using that more frequently than audio acrobat. For starters it's a free service (although they do have paid options too.) I like how whistletree automatically records the calls for me and I don't have to 3-way a from a separate conference line when I'm doing a conference call, I can stop and restart a recording at any point, which eliminates the need for a lot of editing of my calls. Whistletree also offers the ability to do live webinars for free, and with their paid service, your webinars can be saved for future use as a video. It's one of my new favorites! Hope this helps.

    Hi heather,
Yes, I've heard of Whistletree and the great part is that it's free. One of the elements of Audio Acrobat that I love that are their audio notes where I can share my audio recordings but also put other content on those pages. Here's an example of one http://www.audioacrobat.com/no....
  • Great article. With so many ways to connect it is important to offer choices to best fit each person!
